Because UNIX systems get very cranky if they lose power without being properly shut down. you know how Windows will come up and scold you while it runs ScanDisk and tell you you were a bad person? Well UNIX boxes don't even talk to you. They mumble, grumble and nearly go postal trying to fix fragmented file systems. People who work with them try to keep them happy always.
