I didn't think it used "ploys" of any sort, but wasn't part of the message behind "Dogma" to rethink our religion and come up with our own ideals?
And besides, "Signs" was pretty good. The ending wasn't all that great (especially considering the fact that M. Night Shymalan is well known for his plot twist endings), but I liked it. The scene with the alien on the television broadcast was my favorite part.
