Richie wore a mask the whole movie, between his hair, headband and glasses he shut himself off from the world, as a way of hiding himself due to emotional issues, this is a theme in the movie...each charachter has the things that they hide behind......when richie has his break, he removes his mask, as he no longer needs it, he takes off his barrier.....
