There is always getting your script optioned. That means the studio retains the rights, but not neccessarily to do anything with it. You get paid for optioned scripts and every now and then something gets produced.

Example: When the novel of CONGO came out, paramount optioned a screenplay. Then they sat on it for 15 years. Then in '95 (I think) when Jurassic park was realeased and anything with Michael Chricton's name on it was gold, Paramount blew the dust off the screenply and produced it.

That is the success story of an optioned screenplay (the crappiness of Congo not-withstanding). So If congo can get made man... shoot for the stars.
