I disagree, there are tons of studio politics that come into play on major-studio DVD titles that can and do get in the way of the supplements (*cough*dogma*cough*). Criterion doesn't have such problems, and they really treat every title like a labor-of-love. As opposed to having a "by-the-books" approach to special edition DVDs, the individual Criterion special editions really do seem to have the supplements tailored to the individual project, and *THAT'S* what sets them apart to me.
As Donnacha has pointed out, Criterion is a small, independent company that doesn't have the resources of the major studios, so they *HAVE* to charge a bit more to stay afloat. I'm happy to pay a few bucks more to support their efforts- who else would release a special edition of RATCATCHER anyway? It was one of my favorite films of 2000, and I'm estatic that Criterion is putting it out and putting supplements on it, to boot.
