Because he's a director and this may surprise you but he doesn't want to just be "that guy who created jay and silent bob" all his life.

By saying that you've basically said "Kevin Smith films would be shit without Jay & Silent bob" which obviously isn't true.
maybe you should focus on the quality of the script/acting instead of 2 tired old characters that aren't even as funny as they once were.
