The good thing about Vulgar is that it's a very unique look at male rape, which is an understudied subject. The clown being raped thing sounds like a joke -- but it's not funny and it's not played humorously at all. It fucks with the audiences' perceptions of what the filmmaker is trying to do (which, I still don't know that I understand what he was going for).
On the other hand, it's not an easily categorized film. There are straight dramatic, serious scenes and there are jokey bits as well. It makes the movie a lot more difficult to digest. If you could think of it as just a joke, or just a drama, it would be easier to accept. As it is, it's very confusing. I consider this a detriment, but someone else could feel just the opposite.
This isn't meant to be a comfortable popcorn movie. I personally don't think it's fun entertainment. It is interesting, though, if only as a study in what kind of f'ed up ideas someone will come up with.
: i read a few reviews that have stated the movie stries to be sentemental in scenes. this made me groan. i can take the silliest and dumbest humor imaginable, as long as it doesnt take itself seriously. please tell me they dont try to make it more than one long clown getting raped joke
