I am spectacularly witty.
: Because I always miss the good shit, I'm bringing this up again. It's a good topic. Here's some of Malcolm's and some dude's comments:
: ***
: he fact remains that he is the most talented and interesting artist in hip hop right now.
: ----Someone please explain this to me. What's interesting about misogony and homophobia?
: ***
: I wouldn't say "exciting" or "encouraging", but "interesting"? That's fair. Misogyny and homophobia are two major themes of American culture, and whether they disgust you or not, we'd do well to study them.
: Eight Mile, I'm guessing, has probably set new records by now (I couldn't make on opening night because all the shows were sold out by 3 in the afternoon). Eminem has more influence over American culture than just about any other artist, in any genre, out there. You might think his stuff is ugly, but if you want to know where America's at, you'd better pay attention.
: ***
: It almost seems like people feel that tolerataing his offensive attitudes is cool..."Hey man...he's being ironic"
: ***
: I don't think that's the attitude most people take. Probably the majority of people listening to his shit have been raised with misogynistic and homophobic attitudes to begin with. Those who ARE disgusted are more likely to say that they disapprove, but appreciate his skill.
: The "irony" thing is crap. If he can't stand behind what he says, then it weakens his point. Everyone should go check out Tori Amos's version of "Bonnie & Clyde '97" to hear how someone's own words can be turned back against them in a powerful way. Suck it, Marshall!
: ***
: Just because he says he's "trying" to be inflamatory...doesn't make it right.
: ***
: Shades of the GLAAD/J&SBSB controversy, anyone? Shades of "Vulgar"? Hello, hello, is hypocrisy home?
: All art is not going to fit our moral standards. It's not about "right" or "wrong". Jim Morrison is recognized as a genius, after all, and he said he wanted to fuck his mother.
: ***
: Who else is making good, good rap music? It will be easy to bring up acts that have made good songs, ie Jurassic Five. But right now, and for the last three years or so, no rap artist comes close to this Eminem. Plain and simple.
: ***
: Responding to this guy -- pshaw! Eminem may be the most widely publicized rap artist, and I'll admit he's good, but there are tons of others who leave him in the dust. Outkast is making more musically experimental, more lyrically challenging music (AND managing not to resort to cheap, easy "fag & bitch" battle rhymes). Em can't TOUCH Mos Def. I'd put Eminem about up there with Jay-Z -- decent, underrated mainstream artists who'll hopefully grow with time.
: ***
: -----Well....in my opinion.....there has been no great rap since NWA.
: ***
: And NWA weren't homophobic and misogynistic? HELLO, MCFLY? Even I'm not so PC that I'd approve of the same exact words from a black man's mouth that I'd condemn from a white man.
: ***
: And take a look at PUBLIC ENEMY...Listen to FEAR OF A BLACK PLANET or TAKES A NATION OF MILLIONS.......you tell me what good rap is then
: ***
: Here I'm with you. Educate yourselves, children!
: ***
: It's certainly not some dorkus bitching about Moby.
: ***
: Again, here I'm with you. It's sad that Eminem feels the need to pick ridiculous targets for his anger. I suggest therapy.
: ***
: I don't know if anybodies noticed but now it's kinda gotten egocentric and about nothing but gettin rich, fucking, killing and getting high....oh...and complaining about how famous you are.
: ***
: Let's throw out a few song titles --
: "Money", Pink Floyd, about getting rich
: "Delia", Johnny Cash, about killing your wife
: "Freebird" or "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" or "Everybody Must Get Stoned" -- god, the Beatles and Dylan, what druggie bums!
: As for fucking, how about every pop song from the last 75 years ("Satisfaction"? "Whole Lotta Love"? "Like a Virgin"?). And as for complaining about how famous you are -- how about "Rape Me" by Kurt Cobain, or every word out of Eddie Vedder's mouth?
: The excesses you're mentioning are common to ALL popular music. Hip-hop simply happens to use the blunt language of street battling.
: ***
: I grew up on the DEAD KENNEDIES, THE CLASH, CRASS, SEX PISTOLS........now THAT was something to sink yer teeth into
: ***
: Shit, and what role models THEY were! They never shot up, or killed their girlfriends, or...oh. Nevermind.
: ***
: All you poor guys got is NELLY and BLINK 182
: ***
: Yeah, and the kids in the 80's had Tiffany, the kids in the 70's had Leif Garrett, the kids in the 60's had Fabian.
: Most pop culture is diluted crap, and it ALWAYS is. "These kids today" are no stupider than the adults who listen to Garth Brooks and Kenny G.
: It's up to the discriminating and intelligent individuals of ALL ages to navigate the mainstream culture & learn its lessons, without letting it contaminate their minds. It has nothing to do with a generational gap. You sound like a crotchety old man!
: Get with the times, pops. Eminem is the new Elvis, and he's gonna shake up your pelvis. Like him or hate him, he is VERY important.
