Question that might make me look dumb

Anyhow, what does "jumped the shark" mean exactly? I've pieced together by context that it is obviously similar to going too far, going overboard, etc.

I assume it was born from the episode of HAPPY DAYS referenced in CLERKS: TAS where the Fonz jumps a shark, and that just stretched the limits of believability and such. Is this even close? Am I completely retarded? Why don't you love mommy anymore?
