Help me, Star Wars geeks, you're my only hope....

I was just wondering about Ep.1. Yoda says little Anakin is way too old to be trained to be a Jedi. How come in EMPIRE..., he decides to train Luke? The best I can come up with is that they (Yoda and Kenobi) figure they have nothing to lose since Luke is the last person, besides Leia, that can be trained. Any suggestions?
