Go to a couple publishers websites, they usually give a little preview of what each title is about. I also recommend going to www.popcultureshock.com, where you can look at a few preview pages for some of the weeks releases. Another good thing to do is just go to a comic book shop and talk to the guy behind the counter. If you let him know what you're into he'll be able to recommend a ton of great books.
Ok, here's my recommendations:
Fantastic Four- I never really read FF until a couple months ago when they had an issue featuring the new creative team that cost only 9 cents. It was a great read. That was issue #60 and they are currently on #63 so it should be pretty easy to hunt down the issues.
The "Ultimate" TPBs- The "Ultimate" titles are great for people just getting into comics. What they do is reintroduce some of Marvel's biggest charcters in new stories updated for the time we live in today. There are currently 4 Ultimate Spider-Man, 3 Ultimate X-Men and 1 for The Ultimates (which is almost like the Avengers starring Captain America, Iron Man and Thor). The Ultimates is one of my favorite books out there today, I highly recommend it.
Hellblazer- A more mature book printed under DC's "Vertigo" imprint. It's sort of supernatural-noir, and a great read. There are a bunch of tradepaper backs out there and they are currently on the second issue of a new story arc that's really good.
Batman- I just started reading Batman because of the new creative team behind it. They started on issue #608 which might be a little hard to find, and issue #609 just came out yesterday. It's a great book and I'm glad I got it before it was hard to find.
Crimson- This was a great vampire story that came out a few years ago, some of the issues are hard to find, but the 4 TPBs are easily available.
The Hood- This was a 6 issue miniseries that was printed under Marvel's "MAX" imprint about a guy who stumbles across a mystical set of boots and a cloak that give him superpowers. Instead of becomming a hero like we see in comics all the time he tries to become a supervillain. It's a great book and I really recommend it.
Spider-Man/Black Cat- Written by Kevin Smith this is a great mini. It's currently on issue #3, issue #1 is still a little easy to find and so is #2. I think this one is a definite "must buy".
Well, I hope I was a help. You can find any of these for sale at www.midtowncomics.com. Thats one of the best comic stores online and who I go through if I ever need anything. Good luck!
