That's the feeling I've gotten from people, as far as they're the "big kids" on the playground, and try to push everyone else out of the way. Myself, I like both DC & Marvel, and others (Dark Horse, Image, and Oni, to name a few). But as far as dealing with their characters in other mediums outside of the comics arena, I'd have to say Marvel has it all over them. With the exception of the Hulk TV movies, Marvel has been really good about making sure their characters are represented well in television & movies (Especially with the X-MEN & SPIDER-MAN movies, and the cartoons of late, in my opinion). DC has been too much about "making a buck", and to hell with the geeks that buy the comics and give as shit about the characters. They want to rake in box office bucks from everyone, and so then you get SUPERMAN IV, and the last two BATMAN flicks.
My advice for someone breaking into comic reading is to get a lot of the TPB collections, archives, and any books that recollect the stories of any characters that interest you. Next, get crossover one-shots & Elseworlds/What If... type stories for new takes on beloved characters. There are a LOT of great Batman & Superman Elseworlds stories out there I think you'd get into, especially the Batman stories. And get the Bluntman & Cronic TPB. Excellent book.
Hope I was some help for you.
