People often believe what they want to believe and don't ask questions they don't really want to know the answers to, particularly of people they're in like/love with. It's perfectly realistic.
: Holden should have caught on that Alyssa was full of shit concerning her fucking-history. When they're sitting on the swings she said she was gay because it was just the way she always felt (..."Women feel right." ect.). Then later on when they're lying there in the blue light ("Why me?") she says the reason she became a lesbian in the first place to "not limit the likleyhood of finding that one person who complemented her so completly." That just ruined the whole movie for me.
