First and foremost, I recommend: Stanley Kubrick. Start with "A Clockwork Orange". After you've recovered from that fantastic art film, move on to other works by him but end it all with, my favorite, "Full Metal Jacket". Jim Jarmusch, Spike Lee and Wim Wenders should be next on your list. Their works are quite eclectic to different extents and should be studied thoroughly.
I would suggest staying away from directors who do mainstream touchy feely movies. In my opinion, it's hard to find the art value of most touch feely type movies. Same with action movies like the Matrix for example. That movie was VERY well put together and enjoyable for the art, however, the movies that followed based on the technology the Matrix used, lacked the creative content needed to encaptulate the full attention of those watching.
Last but not least, I'm sure you were expecting this because it's why we're all here, study the genius Kevin Smith. I must say that although I'm not in love with HIM, I AM in love with his style. Kevin has directed some very well thought out and produced films.
