I think I actually...somewhat....understand now! I really appreciate everyone's explanation! I guess I just assumed by buying a widescreen it would eliminate the bars...but now I understand that NOT to be true. The bars actually don't bother me...and I'd prefer to see the entire screen, rather than zoom...but my brother has a different opinion. Thanks again!

: : ...but wasn't the original question about having black bars on the screen in general? Basically "I have a widescreen TV but still have black bars. Why?"

: No, the question was "I still have black bars on *some* DVDs". Specifying "Attack of the Clones" facilitated the answer, but it could just as easily have been "Lawrence of Arabia", "2001: A Space Odyssey", or "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back".

: : I know the aspect ratio matters, but what I'm saying is that w/those TVs, I think you'd get black bars no matter what the ratio is.

: I don't have one of the TVs, so I can't say from personal experience that you're wrong, but the original poster said it only happens on some DVDs, so I think that, unless a bunch of movies that are supposed to be 1.85 are also showing the lines, that's probably the reason.
