This is some of Mark Millars best work, it feels just a step away from our own world, and I love it.
It's a good idea though, Marvel comics are extremely heavy with continuity. In order to understand some of whats going on in todays titles you have to have been reading them for a while. If a new reader comes in and tries to pick up an issue of X-Men they'll feel utterly lost (I'm still waiting for a good time to jump into New X-Men).
As someone who just got back into comics it felt good to be able to read a book about characters I liked and not have to search around for something that would tell me what happend during the years I was absent. The Ultimate line was created for new readers, and I can see how some die hard Marvel fans think it's a lame idea. But comics (as well as all other entertainment mediums) are about one thing: Money. Marvel wants to sell books, and the best way is via this "Marvel-Lite". I just think that they are all extremely well written and drawn.
Even if you hate the Ultimate books you have to admit, Bryan Hitch does INCREDIBLE artwork in The Ultimates.
