Not of the Scream variety, but go back to the old school techniques. Today's movies depend too much on special effects, and as a result, the real characters become flat and stereotypical. Take some tips from the Shining and more suspense/horror movies and make the characters drive the story and the moods. Escape from the campiness that has engulfed current horror movies.
It can't be THAT hard, can it?
