I've made this point so many times, yet most people dont seem to get it. Basically, it is human nature to want to believe that there is something beyond this.....that there is a purpose to all of this madness. Hence, independent of whether or not a god exists, the masses would believe in it anyways......as you point out, history shows this.....it just so happens that some beliefs (in your example Christianity) have been more refined so are now more convincing......
