I also disagree with your thought that just because WWII was 60 years ago it is worth joking about. According to your thought, we can feel free to joke about 9/11 and the sniper 60 years from now. Also the previously mentioned red/death joke will be funny in 60 years.
Again, just because you don't feel connected to a subject doesn't mean that no one else is.
