: When a film is loosely based of a book (such as 10 Things I Hate About You is based off of Taming of the Shrew and O Brother Where Out Thou is Odyssey) do you have to receive any rights to publish your work?

: Thanks

I think in terms of the work you just cited, such as Shakespeare and Homer, after a certain number of years, the work becomes available to the public, and you don't have to ask permission. I know that after 75 years, you don't have to get permission to record and sell a song, but I'm not sure what rules about text are.
