No one had the longevity, the popularity, or the artistic power as Hitchcock. The things he did and the issues he addressed were revolutionary for his time period. Almost every piece of his work can be addressed (and has been, over and over and over . . . )as a great work of literature, with layers upon layers of meaning.

That is what made him so great. In most cases, on the primary level is a suspenseful yarn to draw in the crowds and showcase his talents to the masses. On the other levels are the inner workings of his mind, social critiques, masterful paintings, and many different views of Freudian analysis.

One of the most important aspect that these other great directors lack is a direct relation to the audience. They may create great works, but they can't connect with their audience the way he did. If people don't see your art, does it exist?
