He finished initial shooting in January of 1998 (after 15 months of shooting!!!), but then did reshoots later that year (originally, Jennifer Jason Leigh played the part that Marie Richardson played in the final film. Kubrick decided to reshoot this entire sequence, but Jason Leigh was filming eXistenZ at the time and couldn't commit to going back to London for at least 2 weeks, so Kubrick recast the part). He finished the cut that was released sometime in February of 1999 and it was screened for WB brass and Kidman and Cruise a few days before he died in March.
