If you watch the part where he's in that abandoned house, he finds books full of "Jack" stories...He doesn't realize that he's refering to himself...He wrote the books while he was awake at night and spaced out...Actually he was staying in that abandoned house during his black outs. Then later abandoned his apartment to live with/as Tyler Durden...That's the way I heard it. Does that help?
