My understanding was that they gave Mark's character that surgery because the actor had that surgery in real life and they needed an explanation for his recent weight loss.

: Well, they've introduced a new gal to capture Ed's fancy, Frankie, who is like a chihuahua on crack, she's so happy/perky/wacky. She's also a lawyer and he's hired her to work for him. The long and the short of last night's Lucid Dreaming episode (which was brilliant, by the way) is that he's decided to give things a go with Frankie. Oh, and Mark (the very large kid) has had the gastric bypass surgery (I've got two weeks' worth of episodes that I haven't seen yet).
