: I've had dialup forever! So, I'm sure you can guess how thrilled I am!
: Sooooooo, what should be my first couple things that I download? Kazaa will be a given, and I've got a huge stack of cd-r's ready to go so I can break in my newly installed cd-rw drive!
: Any other recommendations??? Those of you on dialup, what would be the first things you'd do with a faster connection?
Kazaa is sometimes the only way to find older files since the majority of the leeching community thrives on a handful of programs just like it that are all connected. Problems with programs like Kazaa include: viruses, partial or incomplete files, fake files, mislabeled files, and 5 million users so you're constantly uploading. If you want a more civilized file sharing community to be a part of, I'd suggest learning to use IRC. You will always get real files, weeks before they appear on Kazaa, Limewire, WinMX, ect. Also, you will have full control of who leeches from you. And the selection of goodies to be obtained there is astounding. Everything on ISOnews.com or vcdquality.com can be found on IRC. No kidding, on IRC you can get Simpsons episodes and other FOX shows BEFORE they air!
Although cable will certainly be leaps and bounds beyond dialup, more often than not, the bandwidth isn't really all that impressive. Try some of the various 'tweaks' for cable out there for maximizing your speeds. But honestly, I'd be willing to bet that the .edu your posting from right now is muuuuuch faster than your cable will be.
