This is one of the most depressing movies I have seen in a while. And it's a comedy!
Kieran Culkin plays Igby, the name is explained in the film, who is a child coming from a very disfunctional family. Igby has a tough time being accepted by his family, friends, schools and the audience is always left wondering what exactly it is that he is looking for.
Culkin shines in this one, due mostly to great dialogue throughout. "Not going to New Jersey isn't procrastinating... it's common sense."
Amanda Peet- who seems to be one of only a handful of great actresses today- and Claire Danes are also excellent. Goldblum and Philippe plays themselves though, sadly, it hasn't worked for Philippe since Cruel Intentions.
I didn't like the ending because it seemed to go in a different direction than the rest of the story was leading. Also, giving a false sense of hope in a story that is very dark.
Probably the best movie currently sitting on a new releases shelf.
