Had to smile when I read the post title, man. KS, George Carlin,
"Twilight Zone," and Van Morrison notwithstanding, the biggest push I
try to pass along to my buddies is always Crowe. CC highlights for
me:
1. Re-discovering "Maguire." As part of my whole John Eldredge
fixation of last year (including re-reading "TSR" in a study group), I
came across his mini-dissection of it in "Wild at Heart." Needless to
say, awakened me to a whole new level of appreciating just what is
really going on in Jerry's life, and as such watched it again with
nothing but amazement. It's a shame the GREAT lines from that
movie have so quickly become cliche; they're actually really, really
good. Especially in their context.
2. It was while I was in the process of starting to move out of
Washington state late last year that I first came across "Singles." Not
only was its frank-but-well-written subject matter totally appropriate to
hit my ears at that time (having come out of a significant relationship),
but seeing Seattle painted in that loving of a light was wonderful.
3. It's not so bad having "Waiting for Somebody" stuck in your head for
weeks on end. Makes the days happier.
4. Reading in an interview a couple months back that Crowe made
"Singles" as a sort of homage, or way to thank for Allen's "Manhattan."
Now, "Manhattan" is, has been for many years, and will probably
always be my all-time favorite movie. Seeing that it meant this much
to Crowe, too, made him seem all the much more...well, cool.
5. It's not hard to make Cusack awesome to watch and engrossing to
take in (he's just that cool), but it's done in spades in "Anything."
Kudos.
