Because the movie won't be released for several months (and thus can't "speak for itself" for a while) and he's trying to clear up a misconception that arose when some journalists mistook JERSEY GIRL for GIGLI. Pre-release bad publicity is never a good thing, especially when said bad publicity is untrue and the result of two films being mixed up by misinformed reporters.
