Well, the book is true so I guess the orchid scenes are true. As for Kauffman's character, his brother is fictional, but he probably wrote about his personal process to adapt the Orchid Thief fairly closely. Everything in the movie can be taken rather factual up until he let's Donald read the screenplay. Everything from then on is contaminated by Donald's suggestions (i.e. killing the Kauffmans, the car crash, the coked out author and orchid collector).
