Not that Queen of the Damned is my favorite (that would be Interview), but that this co-worker of yours is probably thinking of The Tale of the Body Thief. Rice orginally planned the Vampire Chronicles as a trilogy and even she wasn't pleased with Body Thief.
Read it though...and Memnoch the Devil. The tales of the new vampires are excellent as well, so are the Mayfair witch stories (if you can handle a bit of incest). Rice will have you reading her stuff for years once you're hooked...
