It made itself a body identical to that of Jean's and stole a part of her conciousness and joined the Xmen passing itself off as Jean, who meanwhile was in suspended animation. Phoenix then goes mad, Jean manages to take control and gets Phoenix to commit suicide, upon which the real Jean awakens - the other Xmen don't know this and believing the imposter to have been Jean, they think she is dead...blah blah blah...real Jean returns, happiness ensues! Jean however now goes by the name of Phoenix.
As for Phoenix 2...thats a whole other story!!
