I don't think it is a contradiction. The death penalty pretty much guarantees a quick death, plus in the face of the victims family (if they attend) and the representatives of the state, its in the killers psyche to maintain a show of bravado or sheer nonchalance as a final insult as it kind of reinforces their view that they are powerful even in the face of death - y'know, because they can SEE they're still causing suffering. BUT! By being murdered by a fellow psycho, we imagine they will experience something of the terror and helplessness their victims experienced.
