We're not going to endure, but we can't extinguish ourselves?

I fully agree that we won't survive. We're consume far too much, without putting anything back, for the planet to be able to support us forever. And while sci-fi would have us believe in terraforming... well, I reserve judgement. Besides the fact that between the skyrocketing population, the accompanying increase in disease (not here in the US, no, 'cause we have drugs. But everywhere else. And the US will proceed to be killed by things that we've antibacterialed into such strength that they take us out in one swell foop), and the seemingly overwhelming desire to bomb the fuck out of each other, there's just not much chance we're going to make it.
As long as it doesn't happen till I'm gone, I don't care much.
