On most DVD players over there in the UK(if not most then a lot) you can enter a code that will change the region encoding on the player (USA is region 1, Europe and UK region is 2).
I don't have a player but use my Xbox to watch DVD's. I know for the xbox there is some software coming out called regionX that will alter the region encoding.
The main problem is that some region 1 DVD's have some sort of fancy protection where you need a player that can be set to region one. Alot of the time the above mentioned code you can enter makes the player non-region specific (it will play all regions). For this encoding you need a player that you can set the region to play. I think an evening with Kevin Smith DVD has this protection.
If you are sending a DVD to a friend, why not ask them if they can change the regions on the player.
Hope I've been of help.
: I know, in the U.K., they use a different Video format than they do in the U.S. That's why our U.S. video tapes won't work over there. But does the same apply for DVDs as well?
