I never had a problem with the Mallrats disc. The problem could be a number of different issues. It might be the RSDL change. Usually there is a slight pause in the film when this occurs. It's possible your player is having a problem with RSDL changes and that is causing the pixels.
On the first disc, did you notice that warped mark on the disc before you tried playing it? It's possible your player could have made the mark during play. I had a friend who had an earlier copy of Pulp Fiction that ended up with the same type of mark. It looked like his player actually somehow made a perfect circle around the perimeter of the disc.
You also have to be careful of video stores. Many times the re-wrap used copies and they look like they are factory sealed. And if you ever rented a DVD from a local Blockbuster you know how scratched and scuffed they get.
If I had to make a guess, it is probably something with the player.
