They are really not good for your mouth at all. It ruins your pallet and gums because you aren't supposed to have metal rolling around in your mouth.
A friends wife has had lots of problems and took hers out a few years back. She advises no one to get one. Her husband has several piercings including eyebrow and nose and several ears, but refuses the tounge for that reason. Hasn't stopped a few of my other friends though.
