Question about the Joker

I know that the Joker murdered Jason Todd, the second Robin, as well as Commissioner Gordon's wife, Sarah Essen-Gordon. I was talking about this the other day and some one said that these were the most brutal murders ever committed by the Joker. I was just wondering why they were so brutal. Please don't see me as some sicko, but I was just wondering.
