The distillation process is about the same...it has to do more with where it is made than how. See the water they use for the Scotch, being from Scotland, filters down to the springs, often through peat, or salty soil (speyside) or what ever, depending on the region of Scotland that the Scoth came from. This is why you can identify where the Scotch was made by the taste, and nose. Whatever is in the ground, affects the taste. Scotch, primarily Single Malt, varies quite a bit from distillary to ditillary, and while the shape of the still may affect the taste slightly, the real variations come from the water. Some taste variations also come from the kind of barrel it was aged in. I had a taste out at Glenfiddich from a cask that had been used in the past for Burgandy, and you could taste hints of that.
If you truly have a taste for fine Scoth I suggest the Scotch Malt Whiskey Society (deep pockets won't hurt either) This is the only place you can get SINGLE CASK Scotch. They also hold tasting parties in cvarious cities around the world.
: No offence by the duh thing, i just thought it was funny, picture me saying it like the girl from clueless. But yes, Scotch is Whiskey, just distilled differently to be smoother to the taste.
