Yes, this is old news, but I haven't been hanging out here for a while, so I'll make my feelings on this clear.
Am I thrilled with the casting choice? No, of course not. But I'm going to do my damndest not to let my preconceptions sour me on it, regardless. As to whether or not it's going to be a chick flick... that depends. Did you think Chasing Amy was a chick flick? Kev's already said that this film is going to be similar to Chasing Amy, 'cause that's what Ben wanted. Now, personally, Chasing Amy didn't do that much for me. I like it well enough, but I don't LOVE it the way I do the rest of his stuff. Now, that's just me - I'm fond of the rather less deep premises of Clerks, Mallrats, and J&SBSB (though I had issues with J&SBSB, as well, but I won't go into that here). Dogma had some deep thoughts involved, but it was still pretty funny overall. Chasing Amy, while it had some funny bits in, was a predominantly serious flick. Which is all well and good, don't get me wrong - it's just not usually what I want when I sit down to watch a Smith film.
They're going to be releasing a feature-length Red Dwarf movie in the near-to-middling future. I love Red Dwarf, but right off the bat, this film's got some strikes against it. They've totally fucked up the storyline, it's still going to have Chloe Annette as Kochanski, and Rob Grant isn't there to balance out Doug Naylor. Still, despite my misgivings, I'm going to see it. I love the rest of the cast, I love their chemistry. I will enjoy seeing new Red Dwarf, even if it's not exactly what I want it to be.
That's about the same as I feel about Jersey Girl. I'm willing to see it just because it's something new put out by someone whose work like. And that's all there is to it.
