I'm really glad I told my parents on Saturday that I'd be coming home the weekend after next. My dad's b-day is on the 6th, plus there's Father's Day coming up; I'd have gone this coming weekend, but my brother & his family already have dibs, apparently. I'm glad I'd already made that plan, 'cause otherwise I'd have called them up today and basically said,
"Hi guys! Just wanted to let you know that I'm coming down next weekend to hug you."
I can just imagine the blank stares on the other end of the phone. ;-)
I value the hell out of my parents, and I make sure they know that; when I was there the last time, I took them out to brunch for Mother's Day, then my dad and I spent the day shopping (I know that's a little funky, but my mom hates shopping. At least, shopping for the sake of shopping). I'll do something similar this time, I'm sure. But hearing about this... well, it makes you think, and not exactly happy thoughts. Which isn't a criticism, it's just a fact. I know that someday, I'm going to lose them. It just makes me that much happier that I'm moving back to NJ, where I'll be 45 minutes away max, instead of the current 4 hours.
