I live in NY and we have a strange system:
School starts at 5 years old
Grades 1-3 Elementary School
Grades 4-5 Intermediate School
Grades 6-8 Middle School
Grades 9-12 High School
Plus there is Pre-School for 3 year olds, Kindergarten for 4 year olds and an ungraded Primary which you can take in between Kindergarten and Grade 1.
