So it's been forever since I've had World History. I'm taking this Global Cultures class and my professor sucks.

Two questions I have that I'm having a hard time finding clear answers to in my hunt for info.

#1. Germany and the Soviet Union were allies. So why did Germany get pissy and invade the Soviet Union? The closest thing I've come to finding is that it was over the land of Poland and who was going to get what once it was conquered. Is this the only reason?

#2. I realize the U.S. really need some strong allies in Europe, but I don't quite understand why Roosevelt was willing to turn it's cheek to what Stalin was doing in the Soviet Union just to stomp Hitler? It seems like trading one evil for the next. Granted, from what I've read, Stalin didn't torture people the way Hitler did, but he sure did torture them and lots of 'em.

Sorry if these questions seem stupid. I know it's out of place, but I've been reading all afternoon and figured maybe someone here is a history buff or is taking a world history class or something.
