Has to be the 70's.
Funkadelic was in their prime. James Brown was still kicking (music AND wife wise) The Mighty Zep was rocking, Floyd, Crimson, Genesis, Who, Dead, Yes, Stones, Drug induced Beatles, Etc, Etc. While this misses Jimi and Janis as well as the Big Bopper, as well as all the post 1980 bands that are great, I think the amount of music and new sound was incredible during these 10 years.
Also, If you look at alot of 80s/90's artists, they sample a ton of music from this era, thus keeping it in the forefront of the music scene.
