I've starting going to the gym religiously to make the effort to get back in shape as well, so I feel your pain. Body types just simply come down to what type of workout you're putting them through. If you lift weights, you'll gain muscle mass, lose weight, and bulk up. If you do cardio (bike riding, machines in the gym, running, rowing, etc.), you'll be increasing your lung capacity, keeping your heart healthy, and ultimately slimming down by burning fat rather than focusing on gaining muscle as you would with weights. I'm no health expert, and I'm sure there are countless websites out there that could help you learn more on the subject.
