Yo, the reason you don't see anything about boat trips to Europe is that they don't exist. There's a rumor about being able to work your way to Europe on a boat but it really doesn't happen. Those are all pros and the rest are cruise ships. Just suck it up and take a plane.
Now, for accomodations and general information I recommend the Let's Go Europe books. Best damn thing Harvard's ever come up with. When you get to Europe, ask around the hostels and cheaper pensiones for work. Often you can work for room and board, or find a part time job. Staying in the cheap places and eating cheap food, you can go on for a long time.
Be sure to get some culture while you're there. Most of the museums have free days. Oh, and ALWAYS party with the Australians. They know all the good places. In fact, Australians are a good source of practical information at any stop you make. They get long vacations and are good at making a buck stretch.
