Actually, it's great news for the Detroit Red Wings, lousy news for their fans...
Losing Sergei forces the team to take a long look at what [i.e. WHO] is left in their system. And the cupboard is pretty bare right now. Years of playing great hockey has left the Wings with low draft picks [25-30] in years they have not traded them for Mathieu Schnieder, Chris Chelios, etc.
Detroit fans are in for a few years of misery in the very near future. Illitch traded his team's future to win as manay Cups as he could with Yzerman, Fedorov, Lidstrom et al. But that group is PAST its prime [especially Chelios, who should have retired after a mediocre year last year].
The whole thing in going to bite him in the ass right now, sitting on TWO $ 8 million dollar goaltenders. I hope Cujo [the most over-rated goaltender in history] has the BALLS to use his no trade and make Illitch eat all eight million of his salary one forkful at a time.... probably won't happen, though. In a desperate attempt to shore up his minor league system, Cujo will be tradedd for a pile of prospects and cash ala Alexi Kovalev last year.
ah, well... that's just my opinion and it's worth what you paid for it...

: if you are a detroit red wings fan, this news sucks. Sergei Federov has signed a 5 year contract with the anaheim mighty ducks. The team that swept us in the first round of this years play off. i have always defended Sergei, but this is unforgivable. anyway, happy 500th. tlc
