I started smoking when I was 19 and attending theater school at Columbia College in Chicago. I swear to Christ EVERYBODY smoked. The teachers, the students, EVERYBODY friggin' smoked. I grew up in a house where my mom & dad smoked, and most of my extended family smoked, but I was the only kid out of four to start smoking, and well past when most people start. I think I started partially out of the "cool" factor, I wanted to be cool and "in" with my fellow theater geeks.
I'm still smoking 12 years later, a pack a day every day, but you know...I like to smoke. I like inhaling, I like exhaling, it's completely retarded and I am well aware of that, but I like to smoke. I like people who smoke. I'd like to quit, but my biggest fear isn't the post-quitting nic fits or the irritation (because I'm pretty irritated as a rule), but the post-quitting "eating everything that isn't stapled down" thing. My ass is big enough at the moment.
But like everybody else said, don't start. It's too expensive. If you want the occasional skag, mooch one off someone.
