My understanding is Gibson is making the movie more based on the reality and truthfulness if the life of Christ than on the "hollywood" version of Christ,
Plus i really like the guy who is playing Jesus, he is himself a Christian (was in frequency, pay it forward , angel eyes, his name escapes me lol)
