Well, I think the alternate ending, WAS the original ending. Yes, Jim dies. It seems that they did a fast action, editted together flash of the original ending, in the ending that you saw;
remember "BREATHE DAMMIT!," difference being, Jim didn't.
But, it just doesn't play right, you know? It would have been the superior ending, but it was off, and that much is obvious.
The ending that the ending did have was a huge let-down, in my opinion. Very Hollywood, and not believable.
