I would imagine that they didnt actually "think" the way we do. They probably acted purely on instinct, like animals. when they felt hunger they looked for prey, they huddled together in packs for safety, that sort of thing. Then as they became more sophisticated and needed to convey more complex information to the rest of the pack, like, hunting strategy they started scrawling sequential images on cave walls, which, as anyone who reads comics will tell you, is the single greatest sign of intellectual developement LOL.
